Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

By GraceApr 27,2025

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from the classic film The NeverEnding Story. In this standout moment, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation where he must ride on Jason Momoa's character, Garrett, due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which are only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's character, Henry. This scene, brimming with physical comedy, showcases Steve's frantic efforts to avoid a perilous fall, adding both laughs and tension to the narrative.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a 'Falkor moment' from *The NeverEnding Story*—something majestic and beautiful, yet quickly spiraling into chaos," explained *A Minecraft Movie* director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on top of Jason in this intricate rig, and in true Jack Black fashion, he started singing The NeverEnding Story theme while pretending to ride Jason as if he were Falkor."

The scene is especially amusing given Jack Black's previous role as Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, who played a crucial part in bringing this scene to life, it was a chance to blend humor with action.

"I had a hand in writing that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa shared with a chuckle. "Inspired by Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to execute a stunt where I'd hit the brakes and Jack would slide down, then I'd pull a switcheroo on him. We were brainstorming this at the hotel, and it's incredible that it made it into the movie."

Jack Black added a note of caution, saying, "I'm not sure if it made the final cut since there were multiple versions of the scene. It could have been rated R, but we kept it family-friendly in the end!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa quipped. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
