MultiVersus Fans Applaud Season 5 Updates Before Shutdown, #SaveMultiVersus Trends

The popular Warner Bros. platform fighting game, MultiVersus, is set to shut down at the end of Season 5 in May. Despite the looming closure, the game's latest update, which introduced significant changes to combat speed, has revitalized the gameplay experience, leading fans to rally around the #SaveMultiVersus hashtag on social media.

The community eagerly anticipated the launch of the fifth and final season on February 4 at 9am PT. Developer Player First Games had announced their decision to end the project last week, promising the inclusion of DC’s Aquaman and Looney Toons’ Lola Bunny as the last playable characters. Contrary to expectations of a melancholy farewell, the Season 5 update brought sweeping movement changes, resulting in a much faster-paced game. This adjustment, long requested by players, has arrived just as the game nears its end.

Players noticed the increased combat speed following a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video released by Player First on X/Twitter. The changes mark a significant departure from the slower, criticized gameplay during the MultiVersus beta test in 2022, and even surpass the pace set when the game relaunched last May. According to the Season 5 update patch notes, the faster combat results from reduced hitpause across most attacks, enabling quicker combo strings. Specific characters like Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others have received additional speed adjustments, enhancing their fast fall capabilities during certain aerial attacks. Garnet's changes balance her ground and aerial ringout potential, making her a more nuanced character.

Season 5 has transformed the nearly one-year-old fighting game into something almost unrecognizable, with players enjoying far more than just the two new characters. However, this rejuvenation comes too late, as MultiVersus is scheduled to shut down completely on May 30, ending seasonal content and removing the game from digital storefronts. Warner Bros. Games will disable online play, leaving only offline modes available for fans.

The timing of these changes has left fans feeling both shocked and powerless. X user @PJiggles_ described MultiVersus as “the most interesting bad game in existence,” reflecting on its journey from beta to relaunch and the sudden increase in combat speed. Professional Super Smash Bros. player Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King) questioned the timing of the movement speed increase in a reply to a Player First post.

On Reddit, a user expressed frustration, stating, “...but man, if this was how the relaunch started off we could’ve really had something,” comparing it to Apex Legends, which thrived due to its solid fundamentals despite its monetization issues. Another user, Desperate_Method4032, praised the Season 5 update for fixing “every issue I had with the game,” including improved shield animations, and expressed hope that Warner Bros. might reconsider the shutdown, citing the game's newfound potential.

Despite fan hopes, Player First and Warner Bros. remain committed to the shutdown plan. Game director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts on X, addressing long-unanswered player concerns. Warner Bros. disabled real-money transactions on January 31, and the Season 5 premium battle pass has been made free as a final gesture to the community.

MultiVersus will cease operations at 9 am PT on May 30. As Warner Bros. proceeds with the shutdown, players are finding solace in creating and sharing memes, cherishing the game's final moments of glory before it disappears.
