Nintendo has addressed concerns about the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it for modern games on the new console.
The GameCube controller was showcased during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month. At the event, it was noted that the controller is specifically designed for use with the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, compatible only with Nintendo GameCube games. Nintendo has since clarified this statement, emphasizing that while the controller is primarily intended for GameCube titles, it might be possible to use it with other Nintendo Switch 2 games. However, due to the absence of modern controller features and buttons, players may encounter compatibility issues.
In a statement provided to Nintendo Life, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is tailored for the "Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games" and serves as an optional accessory for playing those titles. The company cautioned that, given its limited functionality compared to other controllers compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, there could be challenges when using it with other games. Importantly, the GameCube controller is only compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch.
