Back in early April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts caught a glimpse of something exciting—mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) support appeared briefly on official system pages before vanishing without explanation. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation and confirm how VRR is being implemented on the new console.
According to an official statement provided to NintendoLife, the initial information published about VRR was inaccurate. The company confirmed that *Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only*. The earlier mention of broader VRR functionality was incorrect, and Nintendo issued an apology: “The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error.”
No Plans for Docked Mode VRR Support
When asked whether VRR support for docked mode might arrive via a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with a firm stance: “We have nothing to announce on this topic.” This means that for now, users who play their Nintendo Switch 2 on a TV will not benefit from VRR technology, at least not at launch.
This clarification comes after some confusion surrounding the original listing and subsequent removal of VRR-related content. The feature was first spotted by eagle-eyed fans and later removed quickly across various regional websites. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented the timeline of these changes, noting how mentions of VRR disappeared gradually over time.
Is There Still Hope for Docked VRR?
While the lack of VRR in docked mode may be disappointing for some, it doesn’t necessarily mean the feature is off the table forever. Sony followed a similar path by adding VRR support to the PS5 through a post-launch update. That precedent gives room for optimism that Nintendo could do the same down the line.
Free Performance Upgrades for Popular Titles
In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company recently released a list of titles receiving free performance upgrades on the new system. Among them are major hits like *Pokémon Scarlet & Violet*, *Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury*, and several others—offering enhanced frame rates and improved visuals.
Additionally, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser expressed confidence in supply logistics, assuring consumers that the company will have sufficient Nintendo Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
