Nintendo has made the unexpected move to postpone U.S. pre-orders for Switch 2, citing Trump's tariffs and shifting market dynamics as contributing factors.
Pre-Order Timeline Disrupted
Originally scheduled for April 9, the U.S. pre-order launch has been delayed indefinitely while Nintendo evaluates pricing strategies. The company confirms the Switch 2 will still hit shelves globally on June 5, 2025.
In an official statement to IGN, Nintendo explained:
We're postponing U.S. Switch 2 pre-orders to analyze tariff implications and market conditions. Updated timing will be shared later. The June 5 launch remains unaffected.
This delay currently only affects the U.S. market - UK pre-orders continue as planned.
Price Concerns Mount
Initial pricing sparked controversy with:
- Base console: $449.99
- Mario Kart World bundle: $499.99
- Mario Kart World standalone: $79.99
The standard Switch 2 package includes:
- Console unit
- Joy-Con 2 controllers (L+R)
- Controller grip and straps
- Docking station
- HDMI and charging cables
Industry Perspectives
Former Nintendo PR executives Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang expressed concerns about consumer reception:
"This feels like a defining challenge for Nintendo's pricing strategy," Ellis remarked.
Global Economic Context
The delay comes amid:
- 54% U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports
- China's 34% retaliatory tariffs
- Potential Vietnam manufacturing complications
Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad noted:
"Nintendo's Vietnam production shift may not fully offset these new tariff impacts."
