Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards to Feature Download Keys

By AndrewMay 14,2025

Nintendo has recently announced that the new Switch 2 game cards will not always contain the full game data. Instead, some of these cards will simply include a key for downloading the game. This new approach was outlined in a customer support post released shortly after this morning's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event. With the Switch 2 set to launch in June, fans can continue buying physical Switch games, but there are some key points to consider.

The focus of the post is on game-key cards, which are physical cards that contain only a download key. This means that you won't find actual game data on these cards; you'll need an internet connection to download the game after inserting the card into your Switch 2. To help consumers make informed purchases, Nintendo will clearly label game-key card cases on the lower front of the box.

There's concern that these cards might eventually replace traditional game cartridges entirely. However, current evidence suggests otherwise.

Social media users have noted that while some upcoming Switch 2 games, such as Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, feature the game-key card disclaimer on their packaging, others like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not. This suggests that the game-key card system might be reserved for larger games that could benefit from the key strategy, such as titles like Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will include a full 64 GB game card at the Switch 2’s launch.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the advanced technology in the new red game cards, which boast faster data reading speeds than those in the original 2017 console. This emphasis on improved performance suggests that not all cartridges will be simple key containers. Nintendo's history of using game cards with additional downloads, as seen with LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch, further supports this.

While it's unclear how prevalent game-key cards will be for the Switch 2, more information is expected to come to light as the launch date approaches. The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2025. For a detailed rundown of everything announced in today's Direct, click here.
