Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: 1080p vs. Hori's 480p

By HarperMay 02,2025

Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera, while officially licensed by Nintendo, offers a significantly lower resolution of just 480p, compared to the 1080p resolution of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. This information was confirmed by the UK My Nintendo Store, highlighting the disparity in video capture quality between the two devices.

Despite its lower resolution, the Piranha Plant camera comes at a more affordable price point than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch 2 supports the use of its proprietary camera accessory as well as any compatible USB-C camera. Both the Nintendo and Hori cameras are set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera boasts some unique features, including the ability to detach the camera housing from the pot, allowing for increased portability. This feature enables users to place the camera directly on top of the Switch 2, a functionality that Nintendo’s camera does not offer. Additionally, the camera’s lens can be obscured by closing the plant’s mouth, adding a playful element to its design.

Nintendo fans expressed surprise and amusement at the Piranha Plant camera’s 480p resolution. Comments on social media platforms like Reddit highlighted the unexpected choice of such a low resolution in 2025, with users like Ramen536Pie questioning the feasibility of producing a camera with such specifications in the current year. Others, such as LizardsoftheGhost, humorously suggested that the camera might have been intended for an earlier console generation like the Wii U, while pokemonfitness1420 jokingly questioned if 480p resolution could be considered outdated.

During the recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2’s GameChat feature, accessible via the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature enhances multiplayer experiences by allowing players to watch and communicate with each other during gameplay, with the camera facilitating visual interaction. The built-in microphone is designed to perform reliably across various gaming environments, making the C button's chat menu a comprehensive tool for multiplayer engagement, potentially marking Nintendo's most ambitious online initiative in years.
