Nintendo Switch 2 Can Utilize Your Smartphone as a Camera — Here's How to Set It Up with Simple Cables
While we already knew the Switch 2 supported third-party USB cameras (particularly those with USB-C connections), an exciting discovery reveals you can actually use your smartphone's built-in camera — a device you already carry daily.
As demonstrated by YouTube channel Will It Work?, Nintendo's next-gen console can recognize modern smartphones as camera devices when connected through an HDMI-to-USB-C capture cable setup.
The setup involves connecting your smartphone via a USB-C to HDMI cable, then linking that to an HDMI capture cable. This effectively makes your phone appear as a standard USB camera to the Switch 2 system.
Will It Work?'s video tutorial recommends using the free TrueVistage app to maximize your phone's camera display by eliminating on-screen clutter. Once properly connected, the Switch 2 will display your phone's camera feed just like any other compatible camera.

While Nintendo offers its official Switch 2 Camera for $54.99, this bulky peripheral has limited functionality beyond the console. This smartphone solution not only makes for an interesting experiment but could save you money and increase convenience — especially for portable GameChat sessions when traveling.
According to affiliate links in Will It Work?'s video, the required cables cost approximately $30.98 total (though prices may vary). This represents about $24 in savings over the official camera — or $29 if you were considering the special Piranha Plant edition. Plus, it prevents purchasing another single-purpose device that might collect dust after initial use.
