Recent reports indicate the new Nvidia app is causing frame rate drops in specific games and PC configurations. This article explores this performance issue stemming from Nvidia's latest game optimization software.
Nvidia App Impacts Game Performance
Frame Rate Instability Affects Select Games and PC Builds
PC Gamer's December 18th testing revealed performance inconsistencies in some games and PC setups using the Nvidia app. Several users have reported stuttering. As a temporary workaround, an Nvidia employee suggested disabling the "Game Filters and Photo Mode" overlay.
Tests with Black Myth: Wukong (Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super) at 1080p Very High settings showed a slight framerate increase from 59fps to 63fps with the overlay off. The 1440p test showed no significant difference. However, enabling the overlay and reducing graphics to Medium resulted in a noticeable 12% frame rate drop.
Cyberpunk 2077 testing (Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4080 Super) showed stable framerates regardless of overlay status. This suggests the problem is game and hardware-specific.
PC Gamer's testing followed user reports on Twitter (X), utilizing the Nvidia forum-suggested temporary fix (disabling the overlay). Despite this, many users continue to experience instability.
The same Twitter (X) thread saw suggestions to revert graphics drivers, and questions about affected games remain. Currently, Nvidia's only official response is the overlay workaround.
Official Nvidia App Launch
Initially launched in beta on February 22, 2024, the Nvidia app replaced GeForce Experience. Both applications target Nvidia GPU users, providing GPU optimization, game recording, and more.
Following beta testing, the official launch occurred in November 2024, coinciding with a graphics driver update for upcoming games. This release introduced a new overlay system and eliminated the need for account logins.
Despite improved features, Nvidia needs to address the negative impact on certain games and PCs.
