Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025

Niantic has announced that Pokemon GO will soon cease support for several older mobile devices, impacting players using 32-bit Android phones. This change will be implemented in two phases: a March 2025 update affecting some Samsung Galaxy Store downloads and a June 2025 update specifically targeting 32-bit Android devices from Google Play.

This decision, while potentially inconvenient for some long-time players, aims to optimize the game's performance on more modern hardware. Millions still actively play Pokemon GO, but those with unsupported devices will need to upgrade to continue their gameplay.

Affected Devices (Partial List):

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Various Android devices released before 2015

Niantic advises affected players to securely save their login credentials. While account access will be restored after upgrading to a compatible device, players will temporarily lose access, including any purchased Pokecoins.

Despite this news, 2025 promises exciting developments for the Pokemon franchise. Anticipated releases include Pokemon Legends: Z-A (release date pending) and rumored titles like Pokemon Black and White remakes and a new Let's Go installment. Further details regarding Pokemon GO's future may emerge during a rumored Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th. The impact on players with older devices is significant, but the broader Pokemon landscape appears vibrant.
