Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Says

By PeytonMay 13,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still on track with the project, and we have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper told Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm about the film's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Currently, the movie remains shrouded in mystery, with one of the few confirmed details being its setting after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously shed light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In the same interview, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that Levy's project is making steady progress. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film. During this period, several projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with a recent THR report indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars slate extends beyond these films. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
