The film adaptation of the beloved 2012 video game, Sleeping Dogs, which was officially canceled earlier this month, may have a new lease on life, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's request on X/Twitter for an adaptation of the game, revealing his efforts to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, igniting hope among fans.
The adaptation was initially announced in 2017, with martial arts star Donnie Yen set to lead the cast. However, the project vanished from the radar a year later, and just weeks ago, Yen confirmed the film's cancellation. Yen expressed his disappointment, saying, "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights. I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"
With Yen's confirmation, fans had lost all hope for a continuation of the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, Liu's recent statement on social media has rekindled excitement. It remains to be seen whether Liu will successfully secure the rights or manage to get the film into production.
Sleeping Dogs was originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and follows the gripping story of detective Wei Shen as he goes undercover to infiltrate one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was critically acclaimed, earning an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Despite its success, no sequels were produced, leaving fans eager for more content from this engaging universe.
