The narrative kicks off with a gripping scene where protagonist Hazel and her mother prepare for an approaching hurricane. After a heated argument, Hazel ventures out, only to witness her home being swept away by floodwaters. Driven by the need to find her missing mother, Hazel uncovers her true heritage, plunging her into a world brimming with fantastical beings drawn from Southern folklore.
Lanier shared, "Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous – and talking – creature in his own right, stuck in a tree following the hurricane’s destruction." Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical abilities to perceive and manipulate the threads that weave the fabric of fate.
As Hazel embarks on her journey, she faces the menacing Haints, corrupted creatures spreading decay. Mastering her Weaving powers becomes crucial for Hazel to cleanse these entities and restore the natural order.
