Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Version: Modding, DLC Possibilities, and Enhancements
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi recently shed light on the game's PC port, addressing player interest in mods and potential DLC. Read on for details.
No Immediate DLC Plans, But Player Feedback Matters
While the development team initially considered adding episodic DLC to the PC version, resource constraints prioritized completing the final game in the trilogy. Hamaguchi stated, "We did have the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC... However, given the limited amount of resources, ...finishing the final game is the team’s 'highest priority'." However, he remains open to adding content based on strong player demand post-release. "If we receive strong requests from players...we would like to consider them."
A Word to the Modding Community
Hamaguchi also addressed the modding community, acknowledging the inevitable influx of user-created content. While the game lacks official mod support, he appealed for responsible modifications: "We respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations—though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate." This reflects a common concern within the gaming industry regarding potentially harmful or disruptive mods.
PC Version Enhancements and Challenges
The PC release boasts graphical improvements over the PS5 version, including enhanced lighting and higher-resolution textures. These enhancements address previous criticisms, such as the "uncanny valley effect" with character faces. More powerful hardware allows for improved 3D models and textures beyond the PS5's capabilities.
The porting process wasn't without its hurdles. Hamaguchi highlighted the complexity of adapting the game's mini-games for PC controls, describing it as a "challenge to tackle the huge number of required tasks."
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment in the Remake trilogy, initially launched on PS5 in February 2024. The PC version arrives on January 23, 2025, via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
