Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicle use, and hotwiring provides a convenient alternative to finding keys. This guide details the process and skill requirements.
Hotwiring in Project Zomboid: A Simple Guide
Hotwiring allows driving without keys, provided the vehicle is functional and fueled. However, prerequisites exist: Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are necessary. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
Hotwiring Steps:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait for completion.
After successful hotwiring, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Skill Leveling:
For non-Burglars, skill progression involves specific in-game actions:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses (mailboxes, sheds, bookshelves) also grant skill XP. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly award skill points. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are required for dismantling/installation. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
