Nintendo is currently deliberating on several factors that will influence the pricing of the upcoming Switch 2. Although industry analysts have speculated to IGN that the Switch 2 could launch at around $400 later this year, Nintendo has not yet made an official announcement regarding the price of their next-generation console.
In a recent Q&A session focused on investors, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, addressed the considerations behind setting an acceptable price range for the Switch 2. He highlighted the impact of inflation and significant shifts in exchange rates since the original Switch was released in 2017. "We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017," Furukawa stated. He emphasized the need to consider consumer expectations for Nintendo product pricing, suggesting a comprehensive approach to setting the price of the new console. "We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account."
It's important to delve into the specifics of Nintendo's pricing strategy. The original Nintendo Switch debuted at $299.99 and has maintained that price for several years. Now, almost eight years on, the question arises: what price range do consumers expect for new Nintendo products? Competitors like Sony and Microsoft have adjusted the prices of their latest consoles due to rising costs, inflation, and currency fluctuations.
As previously mentioned, analysts anticipate a $400 price tag for the Switch 2. This would mark an increase from the $300 starting price of the original Nintendo Switch, which remains in place outside of promotional offers or bundles. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is priced at $350, and the Nintendo Switch Lite at $200. Although specifics about the Switch 2's capabilities and features are limited beyond Nintendo's brief reveal, indications suggest it will be a more robust and advanced console, making a $400 price seem reasonable.
Nintendo Switch 2 - First Look

Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, where they will provide a detailed examination of the console following its initial reveal last month. This event will showcase the Switch 2's design, offer a sneak peek at what appears to be Mario Kart 9, and introduce a potential 'mouse' mode for the new Joy-Con.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the Switch 2, several questions remain unanswered, including the functionality of a new Joy-Con button, the console's processing power, and the purposes of new ports. Nintendo plans to address these questions and more through Switch 2 hands-on events in various global cities.
Shuntaro Furukawa also confirmed that Nintendo has no intention of altering the price of the original Switch, even with the launch of the Switch 2 on the horizon, indicating stability in pricing for the existing model.
