Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O Launches on Steam this Winter
Virtua Fighter Series' First Steam Debut
SEGA is bringing the iconic Virtua Fighter series to Steam for the very first time with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. This latest remaster marks the fifth major update to the 18-year-old Virtua Fighter 5. While the exact release date remains under wraps, SEGA has hinted at a winter launch.
Despite numerous releases of this title, SEGA labels Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O as "the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter." Players can look forward to rollback netcode support for seamless online play, even on less-than-ideal internet connections. The game also boasts 4K graphics, updated high-resolution textures, and a smooth 60 fps framerate, ensuring a visually stunning and fluid gaming experience.
Gamers will have access to beloved modes like Rank Match, Arcade, Training, and Versus. Additionally, two new features are being introduced: the ability to host "custom online tournaments and leagues with up to 16 players," and a Spectator Mode, which allows players to watch and learn from others, picking up new moves and strategies to outsmart their opponents.
The reception to the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O YouTube trailer has been overwhelmingly positive. Fans are thrilled, with one stating, "Am I going to buy another copy of Virtua Fighter 5? You damn right." The excitement is palpable, especially among PC gamers, though some are still holding out hope for Virtua Fighter 6. One fan humorously remarked, "Once the world is a radioactive wasteland with no internet after WW3, Sega will finally release VF6."
Previously Expected as Virtua Fighter 6
Earlier this month, an interview with VGC hinted at the development of Virtua Fighter 6. Justin Scarpone, SEGA’s global head of transmedia, mentioned, "we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed."
However, hopes for VF6 were dashed when Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O was listed on Steam on November 22, featuring enhanced visuals, new modes, and the crucial addition of rollback netcode.
The Return of the Classic Fighting Game
Virtua Fighter 5 originally debuted on the SEGA Lindbergh arcade platform in July 2006, later being ported to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007. The game's storyline revolves around J6 or Judgement 6, who invites the world's best fighters to the Fifth World Fighting Tournament. The original game offered 17 fighters, with later versions, including Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O, expanding to 19 playable characters.
Since its debut, Virtua Fighter 5 has seen several updates and remasters, each enhancing the game and reaching new audiences. These iterations include:
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R (2008)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (2010)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021)
⚫︎ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O (2024)
With its updated visuals and modern features, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O continues to excite fans of the VF series, promising a thrilling return to this beloved classic.
