PlayStation's renewed focus on family-friendly games, fueled by the phenomenal success of Astro Bot, signals a potential resurgence of beloved legacy IPs.

Astro Bot's Triumph: Astro Bot, released in September 2024, has surpassed 1.5 million copies sold and clinched the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024. This success, along with the strong performance of Helldivers 2, prompted Sony's leadership to emphasize expansion into family-oriented and live-service game genres.

A Family-Friendly Future for PlayStation: Sony recognizes the untapped potential within its family-genre catalog. While titles like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and Jak and Daxter haven't seen new installments in over a decade, and others like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon are now under Xbox's umbrella, Ratchet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and the newly successful Astro Bot represent PlayStation's recent efforts in this space. PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst stressed the significance of Astro Bot as a testament to PlayStation's capabilities and a celebration of its heritage.

Legacy IPs: A Potential Comeback? The inclusion of Ape Escape monkeys in the Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer, coupled with the popularity of Sly Cooper on the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, hints at a possible revival of dormant family-friendly IPs. Sony's acknowledgment of its extensive IP portfolio and its commitment to leveraging legacy assets further strengthens this possibility.
