Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds, each providing unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. Importantly, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of your chosen Background. Let's explore each one:

Arcane Scholar: This scholarly Background grants access to unique dialogue options rooted in your character's academic past. As a graduate of Bragganhyl Academy, your published treatise on soul lineages incurred the wrath of a local lord, leading to your arrest. However, the Emperor recognized your potential and recruited you for the imperial court archives. Expect dialogue reflecting your knowledge of the occult, legal precedent, history, and poetry.

Court Augur: This Background weaves a tragic tale. Your uncanny visions and insights, misinterpreted after a village crop failure, branded you a witch. Fleeing to Highcrown, the Emperor took you under his wing as a personal mystic. Expect dialogue options reflecting your spiritual connection and understanding of magic and the Gods. This Background is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like role, and you'll likely find yourself connecting with Giatta as a companion.

Noble Scion: A classic tale of fallen nobility, this Background casts you as a scion of a wealthy, yet morally bankrupt, family. Scandal and disputes shattered your family's influence, leading you to seek the Emperor's mercy. As a loyal ally to the Emperor, this Background suits players who wish to remain loyal to the empire and serve its interests throughout the Living Lands.

Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution by the Empire, this Background presents a humble past and a preference for wilderness over city life and politics. Your tracking and espionage skills make you a valuable asset to the Emperor. This Background is perfect for players who enjoy a hunter-style play and may find themselves relating more to Marius as a companion.

War Hero: Your valor in quelling a violent Skaenite uprising earned you a place among the Emperor's elite warriors. Loyalty and grit define this Background, making it ideal for players who want to embody a warrior archetype and might find themselves connecting with Kai as a companion.

Every Background's Starting Weapon in Avowed

Each Background provides a starting weapon, all Common-quality one-handed melee weapons. These are meant to be temporary; upgrades or replacements will be necessary as your journey progresses. Choose the Background that best resonates with your desired roleplay style, as all starting weapons can be readily found in the Living Lands after the tutorial.
