Avowed: The Spiritual Successor to Morrowind

By EvelynDec 12,2025

While Avowed may not redefine the genre, it stands as a genuinely charming RPG that resonates deeply with those who love to explore. It channels the spirit of Morrowind, a legendary title that set new benchmarks for immersive worlds well before contemporary gaming conventions took shape.

In Morrowind, adventure awaited around every corner—behind rocks, within dense foliage, atop mountains, and even on the ocean floor. Obsidian Entertainment has embraced the ambitious goal of reviving that pure sense of discovery, and from what we’ve seen, they are delivering beautifully.

The Universe of Pillars of Eternity

Avowed is set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, welcoming players into a deeply crafted world without requiring previous experience with the franchise. Although fans of the earlier titles may find added depth, the narrative gradually unfolds through in-game dialogue and environmental context.

You step into the role of an envoy dispatched by the Aedyr Emperor to the Living Lands, tasked with investigating a strange fungal blight that corrupts souls and induces madness. In this realm, souls follow a cycle—after death, they fade into nothingness, only to later be reborn. The protagonist is no common traveler; they were marked at birth by a deity, though exactly which one remains shrouded in mystery. This divine influence appears as unusual, plant-like growths sprouting from their head, leaving some who cross their path unsettled and fearful.

An Unruly Arrival in Paradise

The protagonist’s journey into the Living Lands begins in turmoil as their vessel comes under assault by deranged Aedyran guards. Their destination—the port town ironically named Paradise—proves anything but peaceful. Key officials are nowhere to be found, the city gates are sealed, and disarray runs rampant. It’s a setup that will feel warmly familiar to veteran RPG enthusiasts.

Venturing out soon reveals the sheer delight of stumbling upon hidden gems. My first move was diving into the coastal waters near the port, where I salvaged sunken valuables while just barely keeping my head above water. From there, I chanced upon a group of smugglers, overheard their schemes, and made a narrow escape after drawing their attention. Back in the port, I eagerly took on new quests and began examining every alcove and hidden passage.

Secrets Hidden in Plain Sight

One standout memory involved breaking into a secured home, looting its contents, and then scaling scaffolding with the agility of a wild goat to reach a remote lighthouse. At the summit, I uncovered a treasure map, rare yellow-tier boots with a unique history, and panoramic vistas that took my breath away. When night descended, nearby fungi began to glow, unveiling hidden routes and concealed mysteries.

Every part of the world is ripe with secrets. Below the lighthouse, within the sewers, a chest lies shrouded in cobwebs, waiting to be cleared by fire. Close by, a nest packed with coins balances on narrow beams. Along a cliff's edge hangs a backpack full of loot, while below rests a weathered skeleton soaking in the sun. Even tossing an ice grenade into the water created a temporary frozen platform, letting me collect sunken riches.

Tales Yet to Be Told

Such rewarding discoveries are plentiful. Supplies appear in unexpected places—on rooftops, behind waterfalls, atop hills—unlocking new missions, unique artifacts, and engaging encounters. While poking around the slums, I broke into a humble shack and encountered a blind man and his sorrowful wife, both hiding from mercenaries on their trail. In another instance, I agreed to help a noble recover a lost ring from the sewers, only to find it enhanced my health regeneration—a benefit I couldn’t pass up.

I also stumbled upon a poignant scene: two lovers who had died together, not far from a lift leading to the northern outskirts, where guards were inspecting a dead contraband runner. Tracking the path further, I battled through a lizard-like encampment and squared off against a formidable giant, pushing my combat strategy and gear to their limits.

Boundless Exploration and Adventure

In just eight hours of gameplay, I encountered a wealth of adventures—all without advancing the central plot or facing repetitive tasks. Instead, I lost myself in exploration, tested different character setups, and learned how gear and items interplay. Whether equipping a shield with a staff or switching to heavy armor and close-combat weapons, every decision revealed new opportunities.

Numerous questions remain unanswered, and many gameplay systems still await my experimentation. My journey through Avowed is far from finished. Ahead lie concealed chests, untold narratives, and long-lost treasures. For now, the game presents an unbroken chain of revelations that reaffirm why role-playing games continue to be one of the most enthralling experiences in interactive entertainment.
