Last year saw the release of many fantastic games, but one indie title truly shone: the roguelike Balatro. Developed by a single person, Balatro defied expectations, earning critical praise and achieving phenomenal commercial success, surpassing 5 million copies sold!
Remarkably, just over a month ago, developer LocalThunk celebrated reaching 3.5 million sales. This means an astounding 1.5 million additional copies were sold in approximately 40 days! This surge is likely attributable to the impact of The Game Awards, a possibility hinted at by the developer on Twitter.
Harvey Elliott, CEO of publisher Playstack, hailed this milestone as an incredible achievement, expressing immense pride in both LocalThunk and the Playstack team.
Even nearly a year after its release, Balatro's success continues. This innovative card-based roguelike receives regular updates, including exciting collaborations, and recently reached a new peak in concurrent Steam players.
