Benedict Cumberbatch, the acclaimed actor behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doctor Strange, has revealed that his character will not feature in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday but will take a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. During an interview with Variety, Cumberbatch humorously exclaimed "f**k it" after accidentally spoiling the news, before elaborating on his character's future in the MCU. He hinted that Doctor Strange will be pivotal in the unfolding narrative of Secret Wars, and also confirmed the development of a third standalone Doctor Strange movie.
"They are very open to discussing where we go next," Cumberbatch shared, expressing enthusiasm about exploring new dimensions of Doctor Strange's character. He pondered on potential writers and directors, as well as which parts of the comic lore to delve into, to ensure the character's continuous evolution. "He's a very rich character to play. He's a complex, contradictory, troubled human who's got these extraordinary abilities, so there's potent stuff to mess about with," he added, underscoring the depth and potential for growth in his role.

Regarding his absence from Avengers: Doomsday, Cumberbatch explained that it's due to "the character not aligning with this part of the story." The film, set to release on May 1, 2026, will star Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and reportedly feature Chris Evans as well, though details remain scarce. The Russo Brothers, known for their work on previous Avengers films, are directing, and the movie will continue to explore the multiverse, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also expected to appear.
In the nearer future, Phase 6 of the MCU will commence with The Fantastic Four: First Steps this July. Following Avengers: Doomsday, fans can look forward to Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release on May 7, 2027, where Doctor Strange is set to play a significant role.
