Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman will serve as writers and showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with Gellar's potential return adding a significant layer of intrigue.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and subsequent comic books.
