Van Gogh's iconic Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, reflects his deep emotional connection to the flower, symbolizing gratitude. He famously wrote to a friend: "If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."

He painted four versions in August 1888, revisiting the motif in January 1889 with further repetitions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original (F454) resides at London's National Gallery, one repetition (F457) at Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic (F458), celebrated for its vibrant colors, is housed at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.

This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum (established 1973) and LEGO, faithfully recreates the F458 repetition as a three-dimensional relief, cleverly utilizing abstract pieces to mimic Van Gogh's signature impasto style.

The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet (including a QR code linking to a podcast about Van Gogh) guide the build. The construction process is thoughtfully structured: first, the frame, then the canvas, culminating in mounting the canvas within the frame using pins—a satisfyingly realistic touch that enhances the overall sense of accomplishment and value.

A delightful Easter egg mirrors Van Gogh's addition of a wooden strip to the top of his canvas. LEGO cleverly replicates this detail, adding a separate strip with brown bricks, a subtle nod to the artist's process, visible only to the builder.

While building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, this mirrors Van Gogh's dedication. Take your time; it's a build meant to be savored. The wilting flowers and varied perspectives, initially appearing abstract, create a cohesive whole when viewed from a distance.
