Six years after the Avengers disbanded following Thanos' defeat and Tony Stark's death, the world needs its heroes again. With new Avengers films slated for 2026 and 2027, the MCU is swiftly reassembling the team, starting with Captain America: Brave New World.
"We know people miss the Avengers, and we miss them too," says Nate Moore, a Marvel Studios producer. "But jumping straight back after Endgame wouldn't let people feel the absence."
Moore highlights that Captain America has always been central to the best Avengers teams in Marvel comics. After Steve Rogers passed the shield to Sam Wilson in Avengers: Endgame, the MCU focused on developing Wilson into a leader. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcased his struggles, but in Brave New World, Wilson proudly carries the shield. However, a new challenge awaits: leading a new Avengers team.
A marketing clip reveals President Ross (Harrison Ford, replacing the late William Hurt) asking Wilson to restart the Avengers initiative. This might surprise fans, considering Ross's role in creating the Sokovia Accords, which fractured the team."He had a legacy defined by anger," says director Julius Onah. "But now he's an elder statesman, a diplomat, acknowledging past mistakes. He wants to initiate the Avengers for the world's benefit."
Ross, a general, understands tactical advantages. This new Avengers team differs from its predecessor. Captain America is now an official US government role, with Wilson reporting directly to the President. The team will effectively be a branch of the US defense department.
"Ross passed the Sokovia Accords," Moore explains. "He realized unchecked Avengers might not be ideal. He understands that controlled power benefits him, so he wants to control it before someone else does."
"Any nation with Avengers has an advantage," says Moore. "Ross, as a general, understands that."

This new Avengers team suggests a strained relationship between Ross and Wilson. Rogers was anti-government, and Wilson has strived to uphold his predecessor's values.
"I focused on Sam's emotional journey," says Onah. "Putting him opposite someone who previously divided the Avengers creates palpable tension. Ross's actions, including the Sokovia Accords and Sam's imprisonment, fuel this tension."
Perhaps John Walker and his team, featured in Thunderbolts, will become Ross's Avengers instead. Ross's nickname, "Thunderbolt," hints at this possibility.
If so, Wilson could form his own team, aligning with the arrival of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Regardless, Brave New World marks Wilson's journey towards leading the Avengers. Onah aimed to showcase Wilson's readiness.
Onah emphasizes Wilson's empathy as his superpower. While skilled in combat, his understanding of others allows him to effectively wield the shield's values. "That's what makes him a Captain America of this moment," Onah says."Sam wouldn't be ready until he believed he was Captain America," Moore adds. "We wanted to show him questioning his decision. Hopefully, by the end, both he and the audience will agree: there's no one else. He is Captain America, ready to lead the Avengers."
Wilson must act quickly. Only two films precede Avengers: Doomsday. He'll likely recruit his team in Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps. While the path is shorter than the five films leading to The Avengers, Spider-Man, Thor, and Bruce Banner may be waiting. The assembly of Avengers 2.0 begins here.
