Channing Tatum's long-awaited Gambit movie, which was ultimately canceled, was set to bring a unique twist to the superhero genre by embracing a '30s screwball romantic comedy vibe. This intriguing approach was confirmed by actress Lizzy Caplan, who was slated to star alongside Tatum in the film. Speaking to Business Insider, Caplan highlighted the "really cool idea" behind the project, emphasizing its departure from typical superhero fare.

Tatum's journey to portray the charismatic X-Men character Gambit has been well-documented and fraught with challenges. The project faced numerous delays and was officially scrapped following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger. The actor has openly discussed the emotional toll of the cancellation, admitting to being "traumatized" by the ordeal and fearing he might never get the chance to bring Gambit to life on the big screen. However, fans were thrilled by Tatum's surprise cameo as Gambit in the MCU blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, reigniting hope for future appearances.

Caplan, who was reported to take on the female lead role as early as 2017, confirmed in her interview with Business Insider that she had signed on and even had meetings with Tatum about the project. "We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it," Caplan recalled. "I think there was a start date."

In 2018, Simon Kinberg, the producer of the Gambit movie, shared with IGN that the film aimed to capture a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," aligning with Gambit's character as a charming hustler and womanizer. Kinberg noted, "When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy."

Reflecting on the project years later, Caplan corroborated Kinberg's vision, stating, "They wanted to do, like, a '30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun."

As for what lies ahead for Tatum and Gambit, Marvel Studios has yet to reveal any plans, though they have confirmed the integration of the X-Men into the MCU. Last August, Ryan Reynolds, the actor behind Deadpool, further fueled speculation among Gambit fans by tweeting a high-quality version of a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine that was difficult to discern in theaters.
