CD Projekt Red has announced that Ciri will take center stage in The Witcher 4, marking a significant and logical progression in the series' storyline. Executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega explained that the shift from Geralt to Ciri is driven by both the evolution of the game series and the narrative foundation laid by Andrzej Sapkowski's original works.
Mitrega pointed out that Geralt's narrative arc concluded in The Witcher 3, setting the stage for Ciri, who offers immense potential for further development. Ciri, with her rich backstory and complexity in both the books and games, provides developers with a wealth of creative opportunities. Director Sebastian Kalemba highlighted that Ciri's younger age allows players greater freedom to influence her character development, a flexibility not possible with the more established Geralt.
The idea of transitioning the protagonist to Ciri has been under consideration for nearly a decade, underscoring CD Projekt Red's long-term vision of her as Geralt's natural successor. Kalemba further noted that the new challenges and perspectives Ciri will face promise to forge an equally epic new saga.
Actor Doug Cockle, the voice behind Geralt, has endorsed the shift, praising Ciri's vast potential as a lead character. While Geralt will still appear in the game, he will no longer be the central figure, emphasizing the fresh narrative direction that The Witcher 4 will explore.
