Civilization 7 VR Launching Spring 2025

Meta Quest 3 Exclusive VR Experience

Civilization 7 VR Designed Specifically for Meta Quest Platform

Sid Meier's Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will make its VR debut exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. During the February 8, 2025 Civ World Summit, 2K Games and Firaxis revealed this groundbreaking virtual and mixed reality adaptation for the acclaimed strategy series.

Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer for Civ 7, expressed enthusiasm in a 2K blog post: With Civilization VII's full launch imminent, we're thrilled to deliver a revolutionary strategy experience to our dedicated community!

Meta's Director of Games Chris Pruett emphasized the significance of this partnership: Following the Meta Quest 3S launch and our expanding games catalog, Civilization VII VR exemplifies the exciting potential of mixed reality gaming – offering authentic strategic depth tailored for VR enthusiasts.

While Civ 7 will release across PlayStation platforms, the VR version remains exclusive to Meta devices, with no current plans for PSVR2 support.

Immersive Tabletop Gameplay and Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR introduces a Command Table interface that transforms strategy sessions into dynamic, board-game inspired experiences. Players can:

  • Zoom across the virtual battlefield from aerial perspectives
  • Examine intricate unit and building details at close range
  • Seamlessly toggle between VR and mixed reality modes

The mixed reality mode adapts the Command Table to players' physical environments, while VR mode transports users to a museum-style strategic hub featuring customized leader vistas.

Gameplay options include:

  • Single-player campaigns
  • Cooperative play (up to 4 players)
  • Competitive multiplayer battles
  • AI opponent customization

Multiplayer requires both 2K and Meta accounts, with participants appearing as their selected world leaders across the virtual table.

Developer Commitment to Enhancements

Firaxis Games has actively addressed player feedback from Civ 7's early access period. Following mixed Steam reviews highlighting UI concerns, the studio outlined improvement plans via their official channels.

Key focus areas include:

  • Intuitive UI redesign
  • Improved map visualization
  • Text formatting refinements
  • Multiplayer team functionality
  • Expanded map variety

The development team committed to a March quality-of-life update addressing:

  • UI optimizations
  • AI balancing
  • Diplomacy adjustments
  • Crisis mechanics refinements
  • Bug fixes

Civilization 7 VR launches Spring 2025 exclusively for Meta Quest 3/3S, while the standard edition entered early access on February 6 (Deluxe/Founder's Editions) ahead of its February 11 global release on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC platforms.
