Sandfall Interactive announced during Xbox's Developer Direct that the game will launch on April 24, 2025. You can pre-order the base game for $44.99 or opt for the Deluxe Edition at $59.99 on the Xbox Store. Both editions come with a 10% discount on Steam and PS5, priced at $44.99 and $53.99 respectively. While the game is currently available for wishlisting on the Epic Games Store, it's not yet available for purchase there. Monoco, the team's "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," thrives on combat and views competition as a form of meditation. This intriguing character can transform into defeated enemies, adding a dynamic layer to combat by harnessing the powers of fallen foes. Unaffected by the Paintress’ power, Monoco's curiosity about future battles led him to join the group.

Esquie, on the other hand, is a living legend known as the oldest and strongest being in the world. While he takes a backseat in combat, Esquie plays a crucial role in exploration, enabling the team to access various locations across the open world map. By collecting his special stones, players can unlock new abilities and reach previously inaccessible areas.

The other playable characters, revealed on October 16, 2024, in a YouTube video, include Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their diverse personalities and motivations, they unite with a common goal: to stop the cycle of death.

According to an Xbox Wire article dated January 23, 2025, the game introduces a reactive turn-based system, blending real-time elements into the traditional format.

"We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face," stated Guillaume Broche, CEO and creative director. "We wanted it to feel like a real game. Each character has a distinct playstyle, offering multiple ways to engage with them. They all have unique mechanics and skill trees."

This system allows players to dodge enemy attacks or land powerful blows by parrying. Additionally, players can execute more potent attacks by pressing specific buttons. For those without "Sekiro-caliber timing," difficulty settings can be adjusted to modify the parry and dodge windows, catering to various skill levels.

Character customization in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 runs deep. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune's ability to accumulate "Stain" to enhance her abilities. Players can also acquire Luminas, passive effects gained by evolving "Pictos," modifiers linked to equipment, after four battles. Once Pictos are transformed into Luminas, they become permanent, offering endless possibilities for character modification.

With extensive customization options, players can experiment with hundreds of different builds, tailoring each character to their preferred playstyle.
