Krafton Ends Deal with Ironmace, Dark and Darker Mobile to be Renamed
The mobile version of the popular dungeon crawler, Dark and Darker, is facing a name change following Krafton's termination of its agreement with developer Ironmace Studio. While Krafton denies the name change is related to Ironmace's recent $6 million court loss to Nexon, the timing is certainly coincidental.
Ironmace, founded by former Nexon employees, is embroiled in a lawsuit where Nexon alleges the use of trade secrets from a cancelled project (codenamed P3) in the development of Dark and Darker. This legal battle adds a layer of complexity to Krafton's decision to sever ties.
Despite the termination, Krafton insists the mobile game's global launch remains on schedule. However, the game will now be a completely independent release, separate from Ironmace's involvement. The irony isn't lost on observers: Ironmace initially sued for copyright infringement, and now Krafton appears poised to release a functionally similar game under a new name.
A New Name, Same Game?
The situation raises ethical questions regarding the use of intellectual property and the future of the genre. Regardless of the legal outcome, the incident opens the door for similar games to enter the market.
For fans eagerly awaiting the mobile release, the news isn't entirely negative. The planned global launch date remains unchanged, at least for now. Any further developments will be reported as they unfold. We hope the final product maintains the high quality we observed in our previous review.
