Deltarune Chapter 4 Development Update: Almost Ready, But Not Quite There Yet
Undertale creator Toby Fox recently shared exciting news regarding the progress of Deltarune in his latest newsletter. Let's dive into the details.
Chapter 4: Close to Completion, But Delays Remain
Fox confirmed that while Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are planned for a simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4, the launch date is still some time away. Although Chapter 4 is nearing completion—all maps are finished, and battles are playable—some crucial polishing remains. This includes minor improvements to two cutscenes, balancing and visual enhancements for one battle, a background upgrade for another, and refinements to the ending sequences of two more. Despite this, Fox considers Chapter 4 essentially playable, and initial feedback from playtesters has been positive.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially considering this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasizes the need for a polished, bug-free experience across all versions. The team faces several key tasks before launch:
- Testing new game features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Thorough bug testing
Looking Ahead: Chapter 5 and Beyond
Chapter 3 development is complete (as announced in February), and the team has already begun preliminary work on Chapter 5, mapping out areas and designing battle mechanics.
While a concrete release date remains unannounced, Fox offered a preview of some in-game dialogue and character details, including a description of Elnina and a new item, the GingerGuard. Although the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has caused some initial disappointment, the anticipation is high, fueled by Fox's confirmation that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will be longer than the first two chapters.
Fox remains optimistic, suggesting that the release schedule for future chapters will be more consistent once Chapters 3 and 4 are successfully launched.
