Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The collaboration, released in August 2024, suffered from several key issues.
Design Discrepancies:
The initial designs for Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, while faithful to the source material, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators. Subsequent modifications, made to appease the licensors, unfortunately lacked the appeal of the original concepts, leaving players unimpressed. The resulting designs, while adhering to the original character styles, failed to excite the player base.
Lack of Incentive:
Beyond the designs, the limited-time characters and costumes offered little incentive for players to spend. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, bore too strong a resemblance to her base model, offering minimal visual distinction.
Diluted Identity:
Players appreciate Goddess of Victory: NIKKE for its distinctive style and engaging narrative. However, recent collaborations, including the Evangelion event, have been perceived as diluting this identity, leading to a feeling that the effort wasn't worthwhile. The Evangelion event itself was also criticized for feeling drawn-out and lacking inspiration.
Looking Ahead:
Shift Up acknowledges the feedback and promises to incorporate it into future collaborations. The hope is that future crossovers will offer more compelling content and better align with the game's established aesthetic and player expectations. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. The expectation is for Shift Up to deliver more engaging content in the coming months.
