Rumors are swirling online about a potential mobile port of the popular MMORPG, FFXIV. A gaming industry leak from the source Kurakasis suggests that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on bringing the expansive game to mobile devices.
A History of Mobile Final Fantasy:
This wouldn't be Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games. However, past attempts have yielded mixed results. While Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis received a moderate reception, it didn't achieve widespread acclaim. Furthermore, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia was ultimately shut down. Therefore, adapting the complex MMORPG of FFXIV for mobile presents a significant challenge.
Unverified, But Not Entirely Unexpected:
It's crucial to remember that this information remains unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented on the matter. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent lend some credence to the rumor. In 2018, both companies discussed potential collaborations, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda alluded to ongoing projects with Tencent.
Kurakasis' leak provides no concrete timeline, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement could still be some time away.
The Challenge of Mobile Adaptation:
Successfully translating FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising the depth that fans appreciate will be a considerable undertaking. A simplified or poorly executed port could easily disappoint the dedicated player base.
