Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development arena, despite previous retirement plans. His latest endeavor aims to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.

A New Chapter After Fantasian
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge that he's embarking on a new project. While he intended Fantasian to be his final game, the positive experience working with his team has inspired him to continue. This new title, described as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI," will be a collaborative effort with the same team behind Fantasian. The goal? To create something both familiar and innovative, acting as "part two of my farewell note."

Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, stating that the script is complete and he anticipates a two-year development timeline. A June 2024 trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker has fueled fan speculation of a Fantasian sequel, although this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works. No official title or details have been released.

Square Enix Collaboration and Future Plans
Mistwalker and Square Enix partnered to bring FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. This collaboration marked a return to Square Enix for Sakaguchi, where his career began. He expressed the unique experience of completing the circle with a game initially intended as his swan song.

Despite this reunion, Sakaguchi remains focused on his new project and has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise or his past works, stating that he's transitioned from creator to consumer.
