Fortnite Reverses Course: Matte Black Master Chief Style Remains Unlockable
Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Initially, Epic Games announced the style's removal, sparking widespread outrage within the community. This reversal comes amidst the excitement surrounding December's Winterfest event and the highly anticipated return of the Master Chief skin itself.
The Master Chief skin, a popular addition to Fortnite since 2020, recently reappeared in the Item Shop. While its return was generally well-received, the December 23rd announcement regarding the Matte Black style proved controversial. This style, previously advertised as unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players after purchase, was unexpectedly declared unavailable. Epic Games has now corrected this, confirming that players can still unlock the Matte Black style as originally promised.
Controversy Surrounding the Master Chief Skin's Return
The initial decision to remove the Matte Black style drew sharp criticism, with some players citing potential FTC violations. This follows the FTC's recent $72 million refund to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" employed by Epic Games. The dissatisfaction stemmed from the impact on both new and existing Master Chief skin owners, effectively rendering the style inaccessible to those who had purchased the skin previously.
This isn't the only recent skin-related controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with veteran players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are advocating for an "OG" style for original Master Chief skin purchasers, a request Epic Games seems unlikely to fulfill, despite resolving the Matte Black style issue.
