New Games & Sales: 'Emio', 'Gundam Breaker 4' & More

By HazelMar 13,2025

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 29th, 2024! We've got a hefty serving of new releases today, forming the core of this column, as is customary on Thursdays. We'll also delve into a sizable list of new sales, and that's pretty much it for today. Not every day can be a Nintendo Direct, right? Let's dive into the games!

Select New Releases

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)

After a multi-decade hiatus, the Famicom Detective Club is back! This new case stays true to the originals, both in its strengths and weaknesses. It presents an entirely new mystery to unravel, with a visual style similar to the recent Switch remakes. Can you solve the latest serial murder case? I'll be sharing my thoughts in a full review soon.

Gundam Breaker 4 ($59.99)

Mikhail has already penned a comprehensive review of this game, so I'll direct you to his insightful analysis for a complete breakdown of the gameplay and Switch performance. In short: you build and battle Gunpla. While the Switch version naturally lags behind others in performance, it's perfectly playable if it's your only option. Go read Mikhail's review – it's a great one!

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)

Tengo Project continues its impressive streak of remakes/reimaginings. Wild Guns Reloaded, The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors, and Pocky & Rocky Reshrined successfully revived 16-bit classics. Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn applies their magic to an 8-bit title, resulting in a more significant departure from the source material than their previous efforts. However, if you crave a classic-style action-platformer, this one delivers. My review will be up early next week.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

This Valfaris sequel offers a departure from its predecessor's gameplay. Instead of the original's style, it's a 2.5D side-scrolling shoot 'em up. While the genre shift surprised some, embracing the change reveals a fun experience. Another review coming soon!

Nour: Play With Your Food ($9.99)

I'll admit, I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. The food imagery is certainly appealing. Is it about playing with food? Taking photos? Uncovering secrets? Perhaps Mikhail can shed some light on this one – it seems right up his alley.

Monster Jam Showdown ($49.99)

If you're a fan of monsters or jam… well, I'm not sure this game will appeal. It's about Monster Jam, the monster truck spectacle. No preserves, strawberries, or goblins involved. It features local and online multiplayer, along with numerous modes. Reception on other platforms has been mixed, but monster truck enthusiasts have limited options, so if that's your thing, here you go.

WitchSpring R ($39.99)

I believe this is a remake of the original WitchSpring, though I could be mistaken. WitchSpring always struck me as the mobile "we have Atelier at home" series, and it served that niche well. However, at this price point, approaching that of actual Atelier games, I'm less convinced. If you're interested, it does appear to be the best-looking WitchSpring yet.

Depths of Sanity ($19.99)

An underwater exploration game with a fantastical horror twist. You investigate the disappearance of your crew, exploring a vast, dangerous underwater world. Combat is involved. Well-regarded on other platforms, it's likely to find a dedicated following on Switch.

Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire ($19.99)

Voltaire, a vegan vampire, rebels against his bloodthirsty father. This leads to farming and action as he fends off his father's attempts to derail his lifestyle. I'm personally a bit burnt out on the genre, but if you're more enthusiastic about hoeing than I am, give it a look.

Marble Abduction! Patti Hattu ($11.79)

A marble roller game with seventy stages and eighty marbles to collect. Secret collectibles and special challenges await. The classic appeal of speed and precision is present, so if that's your jam, here's a hefty helping.

Leo: The Firefighter Cat ($24.99)

While several firefighting games exist on Switch, most opt for realism. This one might appeal more to younger players. It features twenty missions and the core elements you'd expect from the genre.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage ($21.99)

On the opposite end of the cat game spectrum: a grotesque action game starring a hoverboarding cat who gleefully slices and dices foes. While the game itself is reportedly decent, the Switch version suffers from technical issues impacting the overall experience. Worth considering if you're sensitive to framerate problems.

Arcade Archives Finalizer Super Transformation ($7.99)

Even for a seasoned gamer, Hamster sometimes unearths obscure titles, and this 1985 Konami vertical shooter is one such gem. You play as a transforming robot hero, collecting power-ups to change form and activate abilities. A charming post-Xevious, pre-Tiger Heli shooter.

EGGCONSOLE Xanadu Scenario II PC-8801mkIISR ($6.49)

An early example of a video game expansion pack, Xanadu Scenario II adds a new underworld to explore. Gameplay is largely identical to the first game, but naturally more challenging. Notable for featuring the debut work of legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.

The Backrooms: Survival ($10.99)

A blend of horror, survival, and roguelite elements, enjoyed by many on PC. Best experienced with up to ten players online. Solo play caters to a more specific taste due to its repetitive nature.

Can of Wormholes ($19.99)

You're a sentient tin can tackling worms in this clever puzzle game. One hundred handcrafted puzzles keep things fresh with consistently new ideas. A winner for puzzle fans.

Ninja I & II ($9.99)

Two modern NES-style microgames with a ninja twist. Competitive, ideal for local multiplayer or against the CPU.

Dice Make 10! ($3.99)

A surprisingly fun game with two modes: Tetris-style falling blocks and a wood block puzzle style. The goal is to create rows or columns where the dice faces add up to ten or multiples of ten.

A significant typhoon is passing through, so there's a chance I might not make it to the office for tomorrow's article. We'll address that if necessary. Have a fantastic Thursday, and thanks for reading!
