George R.R. Martin hints at a potential Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement.
The acclaimed author, known for creating the world of Game of Thrones, played a key role in developing the lore for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco prominently featured Martin's contribution in marketing, crediting him alongside Hidetaka Miyazaki for the game's world creation.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin alluded to discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation. While he remained tight-lipped on specifics, this isn't the first time he's hinted at such a project. Miyazaki himself has expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a strong collaborative partner due to FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.
However, Martin revealed a potential roadblock: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire. He admitted that his current writing commitments might limit his participation in an Elden Ring movie. The extensive delays surrounding The Winds of Winter, spanning over a decade, have led to speculation about its eventual completion.
Martin elaborated on his contribution to Elden Ring, describing his collaboration with FromSoftware on establishing the game's rich backstory and lore, focusing on the events preceding the game's present-day setting. He revealed that his work involved extensive world-building, encompassing magic, runes, and historical context, spanning millennia. He confirmed that not all of his created material made it into the final game, suggesting potential content for future installments or adaptations. He drew parallels to Tolkien's extensive world-building in The Lord of the Rings, noting that only a fraction often appears on screen.
