NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, ending its brief international journey. The game's services will cease on April 30th, 2025, with in-app purchases (IAPs) and new downloads already disabled.
Originally launched in Japan in 2021 with significant success, Gran Saga's global version was released in November 2024. Unfortunately, it struggled to maintain momentum and lasted only six months before the decision to shut down was made.
The closure is attributed to financial instability and challenges in sustaining a viable service in a highly competitive global market. Despite its initial appeal, Gran Saga couldn't establish a strong enough presence among the plethora of established games with loyal player bases. The genre demands something truly innovative for new entrants to succeed, a threshold Gran Saga couldn't surpass internationally.
This closure adds to the growing list of gacha RPGs that have failed to endure in an oversaturated market. Recently, I discussed the shutdown of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, and it's not an isolated case. Many other games have also succumbed to the fierce competition, as players tend to stick with familiar titles, making it challenging for new or niche games to survive.
For those who recently made purchases in Gran Saga, you can request a refund until May 30th. However, refunds may not be possible if you've already used your purchases or due to other store policies.
Saying goodbye to Ethprozen, the world of Gran Saga, is undoubtedly difficult for its players. Unfortunately, such closures are becoming increasingly common in the mobile gaming industry.
