Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is now in full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have officially signed an agreement to co-finance this much-anticipated project. Initially announced back in 2018, the film has been relatively quiet until now, but with the involvement of Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America, enthusiasts can finally start anticipating the first-ever live-action Gundam movie hitting the big screen.
The film, currently without an official title, will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is slated for a global theatrical release. This marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which has already produced 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line, generating over $900 million annually.
Legendary and Bandai Namco have promised to steadily release more details as they are finalized. While no specific release dates or plot details have been disclosed yet, a teaser poster has been unveiled to keep the excitement building.
"Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom," the companies stated, highlighting the franchise's groundbreaking impact on the anime world.
