DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's seemingly expressionless face in a recent TV spot for the upcoming film.
The 30-second spot features new footage: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy landscape, possibly near the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight.
Online commentary focused on Superman's face appearing unusually still while his hair and cape billowed in the wind, with some attributing this to CGI imperfections. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that no CGI was used on Corenswet's face in that shot. Responding to a fan, Gunn stated, “There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.” Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location. Therefore, Superman's seemingly stoic expression is entirely natural, possibly a result of the wide-angle lens or even wind affecting Corenswet's facial features during filming.
Despite this clarification, debate continues, with comparisons drawn to Adam Warlock's flight scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. The brief clip has nonetheless generated significant excitement for the Superman film, slated for release on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. IGN offers further details, including an explanation of the DC heroes and villains in the new trailer, Gunn's comments on Krypto's on-screen personality, discussions about the film's thematic focus on hope, and more.
