Exciting news for fans of the beloved RPG series: Suikoden is making a comeback with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG developed by Konami in collaboration with MYTHRIL. Set to launch for free on Android and iOS, this eagerly awaited title doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, but it's expected to hit the app stores later this year.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden first graced the gaming world in 1995, crafted by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami. Drawing inspiration from the classic Chinese novel "Water Margin," the series is known in Japan as Suikoden. Over the years, it has captivated players with its deep tales of political intrigue, mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including various spin-offs, the last installment hit the market back in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a comprehensive revival, fans are greeted with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile offering.
What's in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the series' hallmark tradition of assembling 108 heroes. Staying true to its roots, the game embraces pixel art to deliver that classic Suikoden vibe. You can get a sneak peek at what's in store by watching the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that hold immense power over the world. The protagonist, Hou, is the son of a village chief who just celebrated his first successful hunt. However, his joy is short-lived as a sudden attack on his village sets off a chain of events that changes everything. Alongside Hou, players will follow the journey of Hisui, a servant with a mysterious emotional suppression, Shirin, a childhood friend driven by a strong sense of justice, and Shapur, a former general turned butler, as they work to restore peace.
While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has sparked excitement, it's also met with some reservations from the fanbase. Many have been eagerly anticipating a direct sequel to the main series, and the introduction of a gacha-based mobile game has stirred mixed feelings. Only time will tell how STAR LEAP will be received once it's released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
