Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Implements Media Blackout

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next project, initiating a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's full attention is now dedicated to crafting a new, yet-to-be-revealed game.

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, recently took to social media to reflect on the studio's journey with Baldur’s Gate 3, which has enjoyed tremendous success both critically and commercially. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke hinted, suggesting exciting developments on the horizon.

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that their focus is entirely on their next title, which will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or any other Dungeons & Dragons game. Instead, it's a brand new project, as the studio was unable to generate sufficient internal enthusiasm for a follow-up to Baldur’s Gate.

Back in November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next big game, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries. "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries," he stated, following Baldur’s Gate 3's numerous nominations at The Game Awards.

In a separate interview with IGN in July 2023, Vincke mentioned the possibility of returning to the Divinity: Original Sin series, though he advised fans not to expect it immediately. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," he said, emphasizing the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3.

With Divinity not being the immediate next step, speculation abounds about the nature of Larian's new project. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, could they venture into science fiction, a modern setting, or even explore a new genre entirely? The details remain under wraps, and it might be years before we uncover what Larian has in store.
