Mario Kart 9 Character Revamped for Movie Tie-In

By SimonFeb 22,2025

Nintendo's recent unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 has sparked excitement, but one character's redesign has captured particular attention: Donkey Kong. His appearance seems heavily influenced by his design in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

While most characters in the Mario Kart 9 trailer appeared unchanged, Donkey Kong's new look is striking. His design has remained consistent for years, featuring prominently in titles like Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. However, the movie's successful reimagining of the character has seemingly inspired Nintendo to update his in-game appearance.

The brief glimpse of Donkey Kong in the Mario Kart 9 trailer doesn't allow for a detailed comparison. However, the differences are already apparent. A more thorough side-by-side analysis will likely be possible after the April Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. This event is anticipated to showcase the console's features in greater detail.

The Switch 2 reveal trailer offered a few hints, focusing primarily on its aesthetic. Backwards compatibility was confirmed, a new, mysterious button on the Joy-Cons was shown, and the theory about using the controller as a mouse seems accurate.

Although a 2025 release window was given, a June launch is more probable. This is due to numerous hands-on events planned worldwide, with registration opening shortly.
