Mario Kart World Developer Insights
Prototyping Began in 2017

While launching with Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World's development traces back to 2017 during the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe era. Nintendo's recent Ask the Developer feature reveals how producer Kosuke Yabuki's team began prototyping that March, formally commencing development by year's end. Having refined the series' formula through Deluxe, they aspired to create something more ambitious.
Yabuki explained their decision to abandon numerical sequencing: "We envisioned moving beyond mere course additions toward a transformative experience. 'MARIO KART WORLD' appeared in our concept art from the very beginning."
Transition to Switch 2

Programming Director Kenta Sato revealed that consideration for Switch 2 began in 2020. Initially working with projected specifications, the team later gained access to actual dev kits. "While Switch handles diverse games well," Sato noted, "our expansive vision demanded next-gen hardware to maintain 60fps performance." This confirmation eliminated previous technical concerns, allowing the team to exceed their original creative ambitions.
Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa welcomed the graphical upgrade:
"We embraced the opportunity to enrich environments with higher-density assets, overcoming previous hardware limitations on terrain details and environmental elements."
Cow Joins the Roster

The trailer's revelation of Cow as a playable character delighted fans - a first for the traditionally background-limited bovine. Ishikawa shared how a designer's whimsical sketch inspired the inclusion: "That cartoon of Cow karting just clicked! It revealed untapped potential in course elements." This successful integration has opened doors for future NPC promotions to playable status within the game's cohesive universe.

The team has meticulously crafted various elements to realize their interconnected world vision. From region-specific culinary details to terrain-adaptive karts and dynamic track systems, every aspect reinforces the living, breathing quality of this racing universe.
With anticipation building, Nintendo prepares to launch one of its flagship franchises alongside Switch 2. Mario Kart World races onto the new console exclusively on June 5, 2025. For the latest updates, explore our related coverage below.
