Nexus Mods Bans Donald Trump Marvel Rivals Mod Due to Sociopolitical Concerns

A recently uploaded Donald Trump mod for the popular game, Marvel Rivals, has been removed from Nexus Mods, a prominent modding platform. The removal is attributed to Nexus Mods' policy against mods involving sociopolitical issues, a policy established in 2020.

Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter developed by NetEase Games, has quickly gained millions of players since its release. The game's modding community has been active, creating various modifications, including alternate skins and even crossovers with other franchises like Fortnite. The controversial Trump mod, replacing Captain America's model, quickly circulated on social media, even sparking interest in a potential "Joe Biden" counterpart. However, both mods are now inaccessible on Nexus Mods, resulting in error messages.

The ban aligns with Nexus Mods' 2020 statement prohibiting mods related to US sociopolitical issues, a decision made during the highly contested presidential election. While many Marvel Rivals players expected the ban, given the perceived incongruity of Trump's likeness with Captain America, some expressed dissatisfaction with Nexus Mods' stance on political content. It's worth noting that this isn't the first instance of Trump-themed video game mods; mods featuring him remain available for other games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2.

NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has yet to comment on the use of character mods, including those depicting controversial figures. The company is currently focused on addressing other game-related issues, such as bug fixes and resolving wrongful account bans.
