Marvel Snap has returned and developers wish to switch publishers

On January 19th, a temporary suspension of TikTok's US operations unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game developed by Second Dinner Studios and published by Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary. The game went offline for 24 hours before being restored, though in-app purchases remain unavailable.

This disruption, attributed to political risks surrounding TikTok's ongoing negotiations to sell a 50% stake in its US operations, prompted Second Dinner Studios to announce plans to explore alternative publishers and internalize some services. The 90-day extension granted for this sale leaves Marvel Snap vulnerable to future disruptions should the agreement fail.

While many players experienced authorization issues, PC users via Steam remained unaffected. Second Dinner expressed surprise at the incident and assured players via an official Platform X statement: “Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.” The lack of prior warning, leaving players unaware of potential lockouts and continuing to make in-app purchases, added to the frustration. Further updates are promised.
