Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hints at a potential Minecraft successor in 2025. Let's delve into the details of his announcement.
A Spiritual Successor to Minecraft?
Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) suggesting his next project. He's currently developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with a first-person dungeon crawler style (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he explicitly stated his openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.
The poll overwhelmingly favored a Minecraft-inspired game, garnering 81.5% of nearly 287,000 votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity (45-50 million daily players), this isn't surprising.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He believes players desire a new game in a similar vein, and he's enthusiastic about pursuing this passion project. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, the overwhelming response will likely guide his decision.
It's crucial to note that Notch sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, he can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that any new game will avoid infringing on Mojang and Microsoft's current work, expressing respect for their efforts.
Notch acknowledges the inherent risks of creating a spiritual successor, citing the potential for falling short of expectations. Despite this, he's leaning towards the project due to significant player interest and the potential for financial success.
While awaiting this potential "sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
