The upcoming Monopoly movie, brought to you by Lionsgate, has enlisted John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its writers. These talented individuals previously worked on the acclaimed film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, showcasing their ability to bring board games to life on the big screen. The announcement came today, confirming that Daley and Goldstein will pen the screenplay for this adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game.
Adding to the excitement, the film will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap. This partnership promises to bring a unique perspective to the project, blending Robbie's vision with the creative storytelling of Daley and Goldstein.
In addition to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein recently wrote and directed the original film Mayday. Their portfolio also includes writing credits for The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, demonstrating their versatility across different genres and franchises.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott teamed up with writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, but the project didn't materialize. Another attempt was made in 2015 with Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating on a script by Andrew Niccol, followed by reports in 2019 of Kevin Hart and director Tim Story's involvement. However, none of these versions came to fruition.
Lionsgate's recent acquisition of eOne from Hasbro has reignited efforts to create a Monopoly movie. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, and Margot Robbie's production prowess, fans can hope that this new iteration will finally "pass Go" and deliver a captivating cinematic experience.
