Netflix recently made significant changes to its gaming lineup, removing six previously announced mobile games: Don't Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, Compass Point: West, Lab Rat, Rotwood, and Thirsty Suitors. This isn't the first time Netflix has canceled games after initial announcements; Crashlands 2 suffered a similar fate.
This shift reflects a broader strategic change within Netflix Games. The company appears to be prioritizing narrative-driven games and titles based on its own popular shows and movies, shifting away from its previous focus on indie titles. This is evident in the upcoming additions to Netflix Stories, featuring adaptations of shows like Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias.
While disappointing for those anticipating these cancelled titles, most will still see release elsewhere. Don't Starve Together, initially slated for a Netflix mobile debut, will now launch via Playdigious. Similarly, Rotwood remains in early access on Steam. Tales of the Shire, a Lord of the Rings life sim, has been delayed to early 2025, and the Netflix Games logo's removal from its website suggests it's no longer part of the Netflix platform. The cancellation of Compass Point: West, developed by Netflix-owned Next Games, is particularly noteworthy. Thirsty Suitors, an RPG, will also be released independently.
This reassessment of Netflix's gaming strategy highlights a move toward licensed properties and narrative-focused games, leaving some previously announced indie titles off the platform.
