Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief yet intriguing experiment in narrative gaming. Despite having a solid player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories might come as a surprise to many fans. So, why did Netflix pull the plug on this project? Let's dive into the details!
The news, first reported by Variety, is part of a larger strategic shift at Netflix Games. The company is now focusing on developing mobile titles that include party games, kids' games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences designed for TV play.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects, including the highly anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled, So Is It Shutting Down?
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories consistently ranked among the top-played games on the Netflix platform. Recent reports place it fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which ranks games based on playtime rather than downloads.
Looking ahead, the final interactive title in the Netflix Stories lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Once this game is fully rolled out, no new titles will be developed under the Netflix Stories banner. This announcement comes shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, which was slated for release on April 8th.
The Love Contract was unique as it wasn't based on any existing Netflix IP. It promised an original romance story about an actress navigating a complex love triangle between a Hollywood star and a billionaire, set against a backdrop of fame, scandal, and fake dating. Unfortunately, this game has now been scrapped.
While no new games will be developed, existing Netflix Stories titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple will remain available for players to enjoy. However, planned sequels like Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been cancelled.
That's the full scoop on the cancellation of Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows, you can still check out the existing games on the Google Play Store.
